Savvy by Ingrid Law tells the story of Mibs Beaumont, a young girl who discovers her magical "savvy" on her 13th birthday. As her family faces a crisis, Mibs embarks on an adventure to unlock her powers, learning about herself, family, and the true meaning of strength along the way.

In the crisp spring night, the protagonist and their companions fled a diner, escaping the chaos inside. The relief of stepping outside was palpable, with the sounds of cars akin to gentle waves, contrasting the loudness of the restaurant. As they navigated through potholes towards an alley, the group stayed vigilant for any pursuers, particularly Ozzie. However, he seemed to remain behind, either overwhelmed by embarrassment or the remnants of his pie incident.

A moment of reflection struck as the protagonist noticed a destitute man by the dumpster, prompting a sense of sorrow. In a gesture of compassion, they placed their burger basket and a cherished purple ribbon flower next to him, feeling a connection that acknowledged his existence. This small act symbolized awareness and empathy, contrasting with the self-absorption of their group.

Upon returning to the bus, the lingering buzz from the diner was evident among the friends. Yet Bobbi, her demeanor calm yet probing, silently persisted, prompting the narrator to react. The internal dialogue was disrupted by Fish, who sought clarity amidst Bobbi’s relentless thoughts. The tension built when Bobbi’s teasing escalated, annoying both the protagonist and Fish.

As Lester wrestled with the bus door while juggling stolen pie, the atmosphere grew intense. Bobbi playfully challenged Fish, igniting a fierce response from him. The scene intensified as a sudden wind storm erupted, swirling around them as Fish unleashed his powers, creating chaos and pushing Bobbi back.

Amidst the storm’s fury, the protagonist remained untouched, shielded by Fish’s fierce gusts. This striking contrast highlighted their unique family dynamic. Bobbi and Will Junior stood awestruck, finally grasping the reality that the Beaumont kids were not just different—they were extraordinary. The revelation sent ripples through their understanding of normalcy, showcasing the protagonists’ remarkable abilities and their place in the world, regardless of the chaos surrounding them.
