In Chapter 95, titled “We Solve Murders,” Amy finds herself in a tense situation with Jeff, whom she has restrained after a violent altercation. She has fashioned a lemon sweatshirt into a tourniquet around his thigh. Despite the agony he must be enduring, Jeff remains silent, motivated by his self-respect and the threat of Amy’s gun at his temple. They are concealed in Henk’s private den rather than being taken away in a car, suggesting a deeper level of manipulation.

As they observe Susan Knox in the adjacent boardroom, Jeff realizes Susan is not merely reviewing personnel files, but deleting them. Amy, with a keen understanding of the situation, asks Jeff to promise to remain quiet if she puts down the gun. She tightens the tourniquet as they overhear Susan’s phone call, which reveals Susan is contacting someone about Jeff’s predicament, indicating a deeper conspiracy.

During their conversation, Amy reveals her reasoning behind shooting Jeff—it was to test Susan’s loyalty. As they discuss Susan’s long tenure, her salary, and her suspicious living situation in Hampstead, they begin to piece together a potential betrayal. Amy notes that Susan has been manipulating Jeff financially, something he initially dismisses until confronted with the evidence.

The exchange escalates when Amy answers a phone call from Susan, who confirms Jeff’s culpability in financial misconduct from his laptop. Susan expresses horror at not recognizing this sooner and suggests that the only course of action left for Amy is to eliminate Jeff to prevent him from continuing his schemes. This revelation leaves Jeff reeling, realizing how neglected he’s made Susan feel over the years.

The chapter concludes with a moment of camaraderie between Amy and Jeff, despite the tension, as they share a hug. It illustrates the complex intertwining of professional loyalty, personal relationships, and the moral dilemmas that arise during their intense encounter. Amy emphasizes the importance of appreciation in relationships, hinting at the fragility of trust that led to this precarious situation.

In a transformed school hall filled with joy and celebration, students gather to drink spiked punch under a dazzling atmosphere created by streamers and a glitter ball dangling low. Couples sway gently on the dance floor, but Chuck and his friends can’t help but notice a boy among them who has noticeably grown taller, creating a stir among the girls who now see him in a new light.

Misty approaches Chuck, insisting, “And now you need to dance with me.” Chuck resists, stating, “You know I don’t dance,” which only frustrates Misty further. As the music shifts, a feeling of dread fills Chuck’s heart; he sighs as the realization dawns on him that he must comply. Misty playfully pushes him, urging him to join her in the center of the now-cleared space. She clings to his back and presses closely against him, igniting an electric moment between them.

With an air of confidence, Misty lifts his hand and spins before him while singing about the universal experience of broken hearts. She glances over at him, her eyes pleading for acknowledgment. Chuck, begrudgingly acknowledging her sentiments, responds that his eyes are not the first to shed tears, which she quickly corrects to, “Eye.” The playful banter lightens the mood as he can’t help but frown while she laughs heartily in response.

As the dance continues, Misty whispers sweet nothings, her devotion evident as Chuck lifts her effortlessly and twirls her around, their laughter mingling in the air. In this moment of joy and connection, Misty confesses, “I love you,” which tugs at Chuck’s heartstrings, making the hidden worries he carries — represented by the check weighing heavily in his pocket — feel even more burdensome. His heart aches under the weight of her words while grappling with the complexities of his feelings, signaling the bittersweet nature of youth and love amid a backdrop of celebration.
