The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin explores the nature of creativity and how to cultivate an artistic mindset in everyday life.

    The Source of Creativity

The chapter explores the vast expanse of creative material available to us, encompassing everything we have seen, done, thought, felt, imagined, forgotten, and the unspoken or unthought elements within us. This plethora of source material doesn’t originate from within but exists around us, presenting itself as wisdom surrounding us, an inexhaustible offering that we tap into through sensing, remembering, or tuning in. This tuning in isn’t limited to our experiences but extends to dreams, intuitions, subliminal fragments, and potentially unknown ways, allowing the external to permeate our internal world.

Though it might feel as if these creative inputs come from within, the chapter clarifies that this is an illusion. Only tiny fragments of the vast external Source are stored within us, emerging from the unconscious to form tangible thoughts or ideas. The Source is likened to a cloud, emphasizing the cyclic and fluid nature of creative material and ideas. Just as clouds transform into rain, become part of the ocean, and then evaporate to become clouds again, art operates in a similar cyclical manner. It’s highlighted that this cycle gives birth to an endless circulation of energetic ideas, appearing new with each iteration due to their ever-changing combinations.

The idea that no two clouds—and, by extension, no two artistic ideas—are the same underpins the uniqueness of each creative manifestation. When we encounter a new piece of art that strikes us, the familiarity in an unfamiliar form can resonate deeply, perhaps surfacing an unknown we’ve been unconsciously seeking. This encounter is portrayed as finding a missing piece in an endless puzzle, underscoring the endless possibilities and connections inherent in the creative process. The narrative captures the ethereal and infinite nature of creativity, pushing us to look beyond the inner confines and recognize the ubiquitous and boundless sources of inspiration enveloping us.
