CHAPTER XI. The Guard

As Lad rests on the veranda, he is enveloped by peace, comforted by Sonya’s presence and lulled by her voice, slipping into eternal sleep. Meanwhile, Sonya experiences a miraculous sense of Lad’s protective spirit continuing to shield her from her father’s wrath. The tale concludes with Lad’s owners, the Mistress and the Master, mourning the loss of their noble companion, reflecting on his impactful and fulfilled life.
