Chapter 4 begins with the protagonist following Luke, a fellow captive, as they navigate through the harsh confines of their imprisonment. Luke leads him to a barrel of water where he can wash off the filth of labor, an act that offers only temporary relief from the oppression they endure. Their conversation quickly turns to the grim reality of their existence, with the protagonist voicing the painful truth that being sold is just as dehumanizing as being bought. Luke, who bears deep scars from past punishments, speaks of their brutal master, Henderson, a man who rules with fear and violence to maintain control over those he considers property. The scars on Luke’s back serve as a testament to the suffering they all endure, reinforcing the protagonist’s internal battle between resigning himself to this fate and daring to dream of escape. Though he remains outwardly silent, his mind races with thoughts of freedom.

As the sun rises higher, the day’s labor begins, and the protagonist is paired with a smaller captive named Sammy, a child who has also suffered under Henderson’s cruelty. Together, they are tasked with sawing timber, an exhausting and seemingly endless task made worse by the poor condition of their tools. Each pull of the saw feels like an exercise in futility, their arms aching as sweat drips down their faces. The stifling air inside the pit where they work is thick with dust, making it difficult to breathe. The protagonist struggles with each movement, his mind consumed with thoughts of escape even as his body weakens. Just as exhaustion begins to set in, Henderson arrives, his boots crunching against the gravel, his eyes gleaming with malice as he watches them. He taunts the protagonist for hesitating, questioning if he fears the blade, before making good on his threats and lashing him mercilessly. Pain explodes across the protagonist’s back, his muscles tightening as he collapses, unable to fight back.

Darkness clouds his vision, and when he regains consciousness, he finds himself face-to-face with Sammy once more, her expression one of quiet concern. The pain from the lashing is still fresh, but there is little time to dwell on it. Sammy, despite her small stature, has witnessed the horrors of their master’s cruelty, and her knowledge of his behavior proves invaluable. The protagonist listens intently as she reveals the patterns of Henderson’s actions, information that could be useful if they were to make their escape. In this moment, as Sammy speaks, the protagonist is reminded of his own daughter, and a painful ache grips his chest. It is this thought, the memory of his child, that fuels his determination to break free. Tentatively, he suggests the idea of escape, his voice barely above a whisper, afraid that even the walls might betray them. Sammy hesitates but eventually nods, knowing that freedom, no matter how uncertain, is better than the slow death they face here.

With their plan now forming, the two begin moving cautiously through the compound, their senses heightened with fear. Each step must be precise, each breath controlled, as they avoid the ever-watchful eyes of the overseers. A sudden shift in the wind brings the scent of rain, and the first droplets begin to fall, dampening the ground beneath their feet. The rain, though an inconvenience, is also a blessing, as it helps obscure their tracks. The protagonist knows that if they can make it to the town of “Bluebird Hole,” they have a chance of finding his friend Norman, who might be able to help them. But the journey ahead is fraught with danger, and the possibility of being caught is ever-present. The weight of their decision settles on them both as they step into the dense foliage, moving quickly yet cautiously toward the unknown.

As dawn begins to break, the exhaustion of their journey starts to set in, but there is no time to rest. They must find shelter, somewhere to regain their strength before continuing forward. Just as they begin to feel a small sense of relief at having made it this far undetected, a sound pierces the quiet morning air—a scream. It is distant yet unmistakably filled with terror, and it sends a cold shiver down the protagonist’s spine. His instincts scream at him to run, but he knows that turning back might mean certain death. The realization that their escape has likely been discovered grips him with dread, but there is no turning back now. Their only option is to press on, deeper into the unknown, with the desperate hope that freedom is still within reach.
