The Circus Boys in Dixie Land

    by
The Circus Boys in Dixie Land by Edgar B. P. Darlington is an exciting adventure novel where two young circus performers travel through the southern U.S., facing new challenges and uncovering thrilling escapades along the way.

In Chapter XI of The Circus Boys In Dixie Land, Phil is taken aboard Sully’s private car under threat and duress. As they approach the circus train’s yard, Phil suspects Sully is planning to bring him to the train but doesn’t understand his motives. Sully is determined to intimidate Phil, warning him to remain silent, but Phil, though angry and unafraid, stands his ground. The showman forcibly ushers him into a sleeper car and locks them inside.

Inside, Sully confronts Phil, demanding to know his name and purpose. Phil remains defiant, refusing to provide any answers unless absolutely necessary. Sully reveals he knows Phil’s real identity as a bareback rider from the Sparling show and accuses him of spying. Despite Sully’s threats, Phil does not relent, denying any involvement in a plot against the show. Sully grows frustrated, but before he can act further, the foreman of the stake and chain gang enters, detailing Phil’s questions from the previous day.

Phil stays composed, cleverly deflecting the foreman’s recollections. Sully then becomes increasingly hostile, but Phil boldly accuses him of being involved in dishonest activities. Sully’s anger flares, and he contemplates locking Phil away for the night, hoping to extract information through intimidation. He considers using the threat of violence, but ultimately plans to keep Phil in a linen closet on the car, where he will be confined without the chance to make noise or escape. Sully’s controlling nature is evident as he arranges to have Phil held securely until he decides what to do next. Phil, however, remains determined and unbowed, aware of the danger but resolved not to give in to Sully’s tactics.
